Ian checks out Epic Meal Time
Since October 2010, Epic Meal Time has made a profound impact on YouTube and its viewers.
The YouTube channel features a group of Montrealers, who make crass use of greasy meats and alcohol, most notably bacon and Jack Daniel’s Whiskey.
In this cooking show, they prepare dishes that often contain over 10,000 calories and are messily masticated by the cast and crew.
While constantly cooking up a new episode each Tuesday, Epic Meal Time is not only renowned for its food: the personalities of host Harley Morenstein and friend Alex Perrault add their own brand of nonsensical-yet-clever humour.
The show’s comedic appeal frequently incorporates hip-hop jargon and nicknames, Morenstein being referred to as the Sauce Boss and Perrault as Muscles Glasses.
From humble beginnings, the creators of Epic Meal Time continue to transform the show into a pop-culture phenomenon one strip of bacon at a time.
The kidsmediacentre asked Ian to speculate on the mindset and demographics of the Epic Meal Time audience. Here are his thoughts.
“I am unaware of any particular demographic being targeted, however the majority of the Epic Meal Time audience is likely interested in monumental portions of food, partying and alcohol. These viewers are probably within the ages of 15–30.
“It is possible that a statement is being made that opposes the healthy living obsession that is so prevalent in North America, but this, too, is only a guess. What is interesting to note is that Alex Perrault is a personal trainer and is in quite good physical health. Their societal value, however, is entirely based on one’s own personal paradigm: some may frown upon their disgusting eating habits while others might glorify their unorthodox culinary abilities. Either way, there does not seem to be a correct or incorrect answer when it comes to asserting an interpretation on Epic Meal Time.”
