The Beauty of Education: A Showcase of the Walls of Gateway Public School

It’s July and all evidence of the learning that was, has been peeled off walls and cleared away.

It was a busy last few months of school here in Ontario, with sex-ed curriculum protests, work-to-rule, and the business of wrapping up the school year. But in the midst of this mayhem and upheaval, the learning never stopped.

Last month, before the scholarship and wall art was taken down for the summer, the kidsmediacentre had the privilege of walking the halls of Gateway Public School.

Rivalling any gallery tour, we took in a Dali retrospective, architectural drawings for the school garden and reflections on what it means to be a caring compassionate world citizen. One floor up was a critical review of what healthy eating costs, thoughts and advice on bullying and discussion boards on First Nation’s history.

Ms. Grealish’s Grade 2 class at Gateway PS learned how to use Wordle, a word cloud generator, during a recent computer workshop.

They each made a list of words that described themselves from both the inside and the outside. Each student then entered the descriptive words and customized their own personal wordle.

Here’s what they created:

About Schools' Take on Media

Kids don't just consume media; they adapt it, critique it and create it. It's the water they swim in; a ubiquitous backdrop to their lives. Making sense of all this media, aka: media literacy, is quickly becoming as important as the traditional three Rs (reading writing, arithmetic). Some would argue that with kids spending as much time with media as they do in their daily classroom, it should be at the top of the educational food chain.

We've asked students, kids and teachers across the GTA to show us what they think of the media and entertainment landscape... what has meaning, what has impact and what ends up in the recycle bin. We'll be updating this page regularly. If your school, students - or your child - would like to contribute, please drop us a line.
