“Applied” research is the process of partnering students and faculty with industry and “applying” their talent and skills to a product’s “research and development”. It differs from social science or hypothesis driven research in that it has practical, in-market learning and product development with industry partners as its end goal.
Applied research can be a huge boon to small and medium industries who may be long on vision but short on funding. Increasingly, governments are supporting colleges’ evolution as local, regional and national centres of applied, hands-on research capacity with expanded funding and innovative grants. Colleges like Centennial are well positioned for front-line innovation and development with the public and private sector and offer a smart and economical option for entrepreneurs.
